April is Poetry Month! We’re celebrating it with a special poetry Open Mic event on Saturday, April 14 at 12:15 p.m. (following the yoga class) to coincide with our regular Book Sale that day. Enjoy poetry readings from local poets or come up and share your own! Refreshments will be provided!
The Cahuenga Branch Library made an appearance on NBC’s This Is Us on the episode that aired oon Tuesday, February 27. The library played “Creekside Public Library” in Pittsburgh, circa 1988 in the young Kate and Randall flashback sequence.
The show’s producers, 20th Century Fox Television, came to the library on the morning of February 6 to shoot the scenes. They even set up sone of the lighting equipment outside the building the day before.
Normally, TV or film production pays the owner of the location shoot a compensation for the trouble of filming. Since the library is owned by the City of Los Angeles, 20th Century Fox Television instead donated the $2,500 filming compensation to Friends of Cahuenga Library!

Over 60 Los Angeles Public Library volunteers, including several Friends of library branches gathered at Van Nuys City Hall on April 21 for a presentation in front of the Los Angeles City Council meeting recognizing the $4,401,791.37 worth in hours put in by the LAPL’s 6,250 volunteers in 2016.
Elson Trinidad, president of the Friends of Cahuenga Library was there to represent our Friends group and was recognized along with five other LAPL volunteer representatives in the 13th Council District by Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, who made the council presentation along with City Librarian John Szabo. O’Farrell chairs the Arts, Entertainment, Parks and River Committee on the City Council, which includes the LAPL system.
The presentation ended with Szabo, O’Farrell and the LAPL volunteers holding up an oversized check for $4.4 million to the City representing the monetized hours by LAPL volunteers last year.
After the presentation, the group posed for a group photo outside the Van Nuys City Hall building and gathered for a lunch reception at the nearby Van Nuys Branch Library.
